Privacy policy

I'm Not Dead Yet! is a software service operated by Michael Billman. It automatically monitors periodic check-ins from registered users and, if a user's check-ins stop, automatically notifies that user's previously-designated emergency contact.

What we store, and where

We store what the service needs to do its one job. Your account: your email address, an optional name, and an optional phone number and second email address. Your recipients: the name, email address and optional phone number you give for each person; these are encrypted before they are stored. Your message: the file or note you upload. It is encrypted on your own device before it reaches us, with a passphrase we never see, so we cannot read it. Activity: when you check in, which reminders were sent, and what recipients did with a delivery (downloaded, opened, confirmed).

Data is stored with Cloudflare (hosting, database, file storage) and with Backblaze (an encrypted offsite backup copy of your message), and sent through Resend (email), Twilio (text messages) and, if you turn them on, your browser's push service (Google, Apple or Mozilla). Healthchecks.io receives only a "still running" signal, with no personal data.

Phone numbers and SMS

Phone numbers collected by this service are used only to send account-status text messages: periodic prompts to the account holder confirming they remain active, and a notification to a designated contact if the account holder becomes inactive.

No mobile information — including phone numbers, SMS opt-in status, or messaging consent — is shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. This applies to all categories of information collected by this service. Phone numbers are never sold, shared, or transferred to any third party for any other purpose either.

How consent is given

An account holder provides their own phone number directly, by typing it into their own account's contact-info settings on this site's dashboard (imnotdeadyet.net/dashboard/) after signing in with their own email. That action is the opt-in for the account holder's own number. A phone number is never guessed or purchased. A designated contact's number is entered by the account holder; that contact is asked to confirm it themselves, and receives further text messages only if they choose to (see Your recipients' information below). The terms a user agrees to at that point restate this consent and message frequency in full.

Your recipients' information

You may enter someone's contact details only if they have agreed to be your contact, or you reasonably expect them to. We send each recipient an email (and, if you gave a phone number, a text) asking them to confirm. Nothing about your message is sent to anyone who has not confirmed. A recipient can choose whether to receive text messages, separately from confirming. They can reply STOP at any time, or ask you to remove them. We use a recipient's details only to ask for that confirmation, to reconfirm every few years, and, if your check-ins stop, to deliver your message.

Message frequency

Message frequency is low — typically a small number of messages per month at most, with the possibility of a one-time notification if the account holder becomes inactive. Message and data rates may apply.

Opting out

Reply STOP to any message to opt out at any time, or contact the account holder directly. Reply HELP for assistance.

Notifications and cookies

If you enable browser notifications, your browser gives us an address and keys we use only to send you reminders; remove a device from the dashboard at any time. We use one cookie, to keep you signed in for 30 days. We use no advertising or analytics cookies.

Data retention

Your data is kept while your account exists. You can delete your account at any time from the Account page; your files, the offsite backup copy, your recipients and your contact details are then removed (the backup copy within a few hours). Records of messages we sent you (for example, a reminder) are removed with the account. Sign-in links and codes expire within a day, usually within minutes, and are deleted about a month after they expire.
